Diabetes association demands testing, medication centre

The Diabetic Association of Nigeria (DAN), Jigawa chapter, has appealed to government to establish testing and medication centres for its members. The Chairman of the association, Alhaji Bashir Ringim, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Friday. Ringim, who said that the centres could also be used for enlightenment, sensitisation and managing people living with diabetes, added that diabetes was more dangerous than HIV/AIDS. The chairman said “the moment a diabetic patient has a cut or wound, it takes a long time to heal and in some instances can lead to amputation of affected areas. “If one visits hospital where diabetes patient’s leg or arm is amputated and admitted, he or she will notice that the whole place is smelling too much for people to stay. “We are also appealing to government to create separate wards in hospitals for our members, just like is done for people suffering from tuberculosis and other infectious diseases. “

N-Power begins physical verification of 300,000 volunteers Dec. 4

The 300,000 candidates pre-selected under the Federal Government’s N-Power Scheme will undergo its physical verification phase from Dec. 4 to Dec. 14 in the 774 local government areas of the country. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Job Creation/Youth Employment, Mr Afolabi Imoukhuede said the verification would be done with the N-Power stakeholders in the states such as the National Orientation Agency, N-Power State team, National Assembly Monitors and Observers. Imoukhuede explained that pre-selection could not be equated to final recruitment as those who fell short of the verification criteria and made faulty declarations in their applications would still be disqualified. Accordingly, the presidential aide noted that after the compilation of successfully verified candidates, the final selection would be done followed by the deployment of the volunteers in the Agro, Teach, and Health categories across the country. He noted that out of 2.54 million applicants,

Zimbabwe’s finance minister Chombo in serious trouble

Zimbabwean Finance Minister, Ignatius Chombo, who was detained last week during a military coup, had been handed over to police, the lawyer representing him said on Friday. Prof. Lovemore Madhuku added that Chombo had also been hospitalised. Madhuku said the minister would appear in court, likely on charges of abuse of office, but that the minister was at Harare’s main hospital as he was not well, though he did not specify further. Human Rights Watch — Southern African Director, Dewa Mavhinga confirmed Chombo’s reappearance on Twitter. “Soldiers tonight dropped off Chombo at his house after days of military detention. Law and Order police then arrested him and said they are taking him to Rhodesville police station,” he tweeted late on Thursday. Chombo was among several Mugabe allies reported by media to have been arrested after the military takeover on Nov.17 that forced the leader of 37 years resign. Via... Dpa

New dawn as Zimbabwe gets new President

The new President of Zimbabwe, Mr Emerson Mnangagwa, has been sworn-in by the country’s Chief Justice with all service chiefs making pledges of loyalty. The ceremony took place in a crowded National Sports Stadium where gun salutes took place. Mnangagwa’s presidency puts to an end 37-year rule of Robert Mugabe. Taking his oath of office, the 75-year-old former security chief known as ‘The Crocodile’ vowed to uphold the constitution of the former British colony and protect the rights of Zimbabwe’s 16 million citizens. Even though most Zimbabweans celebrated the exit of 93-year-old Mugabe, some were worried about the future under Mnangagwa. In particular, they questioned his role in the so-called Gukurahundi massacres in Matabeleland in 1983 when an estimated 20,000 people were killed in a crackdown on Mugabe opponents by the North Korean-trained Fifth Brigade. Mnangagwa had, however, denied any part in the atrocities since his return to Zimbabwe after two weeks in hiding and

Atiku officially dumps APC

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a letter he wrote to the APC, Atiku said that the ideals for which he joined the APC had not been met, rather the party had backtracked on all its promises. He added that an attestation to his claim was buttressed in a letter written by a certain governor of the APC accusing the leadership of the party of frosty relationships with those who led the party to its 2015 victory. Read the full text of the letter below: On the 19th of December, 2013, I received members of the All Progressives Congress at my house in Abuja. They had come to appeal to me to join their party after my party, the Peoples Democratic Party, had become factionalized as a result of the special convention of August 31, 2013. The fractionalization of the Peoples Democratic Party on August 31, 2013 had left me in a situation where I was, with several other loyal party members, in limbo, not kn
