Fraudster bags 12 months jail term for extortion

A Karmo Grade I Area Court in the FCT, on Friday sentenced a 29-year-old man, Stephen Yahaya, to 12 months imprisonment for intimidation and extortion.

Yahaya of Suleja in Niger had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of extortion and criminal intimidation.

The judge, Mr Abubakar Sadiq, advised the convict to desist from committing crimes.

The prosecutor, Mrs Florence Auhioboh, had told the court that the complainant, one Saliu Augustine of Kado, Abuja, reported the incident at Life Camp Police Station on Sept 24.

Auhioboh said that on July 18 at about 4.00 p.m., Yahaya criminally called the complainant on phone and told him that he was going to hire someone to kill him.

She told the court that Yahaya sent his account number to the complainant that he should pay some money into the account in order to save his life.

The prosecutor said when the threat became so much the complainant was compelled to deposit N30, 000 into an Ecobank account sent by Yahaya.

She said during police investigation, Yahaya admitted committing the offence which contravened Sections 397 and 292 of the Penal Code.
